rmsf -H hang on tape drives

one of my customer tried to delete a no_hw tape drive but the command hang. it is HP-UX11.31 running on rx6600. VLS9000 mapped several drives to it.
we tried several scenarios,
first,
1. Delete drive21 from device pool in netbackup
2. Unmap drive21 from commandview VLS
3. Ioscan showing no_hw for drive21
4. Rmsf –H hwpath_of_drive21 hang
5. Ioscan and scsimgr commands would hang. Other than those io related commands, OS is running fine.

Next, we tested another scenario with netbackup shut down , then ran rmsf, still had issue,
1. Delete drive21 from device pool in netbackup
2. Unmap drive21 from commandview VLS
3. Ioscan showing no_hw for drive21
4. Shutdown netbackup, made sure no netbackup component is running.
5. Rmsf –H hwpath_of_drive21 hang
6. Ioscan and scsimgr commands would hang.

The only scenario rmsf won’t hang is like this,
1. Booting server up without starting netbackup
2. Using mc and tar command, data can be backed up to drive21
3. Unmap drive21 from commandview VLS
4. Ioscan showing no_hw for drive21
5. Rmsf –H hwpath_of_drive21 succeed
6. Ioscan and scsimgr commands won’t hang either.

It is strange that rmsf won’t report anything back, just hang there.nothing in syslog. We guess it was caused by some process still using that HW path or something like that? I tried to use “scsimgr –f disable -H hwpath_of_drive21” but it failed with warning “Function not implemented”. Is there a way to abort a process who is having access to that hardware address?
any idea?

Re: rmsf -H hang on tape drives

Hi,
For me, it's like netbackup service is still active on the drive. When you shutdown it, maybe it's not really off.
Do you have try to lsof the system to check if a process exist on the drive.
lsof | grep "/dev" or something like this ?

Re: rmsf -H hang on tape drives

Hi

ioscan -s : shows stale entries of HW
rmsf -x : to remove the stale entries.

Re: rmsf -H hang on tape drives

I would have run this sequence the other way round, i.e. :

1. Delete drive21 from device pool in netbackup
2. Rmsf â H hwpath_of_drive21 hang
3. Unmap drive21 from commandview VLS

The _last_ thing you should do is actually disconnect the device.

NO_HW entries generally stick around until reboot...
