root disables after cold install of HPUX 11vi3

I did a cold install of 11vi3 on my system. The install of the OE was successful but now when I am at the console root cannot login and I get a message that the account is disabled but I can login from a console. The thing is I am already at the console!!!!!!!!

Has anyone experienced this issue? Your help is much appreciated.

Go to single user mode and try to change your root password

Hi,
Many thread deal with recovering passwd

But here if I understand you are yet connected on console, so what don't you just do a
# passwd root
Maybe this problem is the consequence of some security tools that you install. Do you have trusted the passwd?

Out of interest, when you did the install, did you select anything other than SEC00 for the Bastille product?
That can lock you out if you chose Sec-10/SEC-20/SEC-30 levels.

Re: root disables after cold install of HPUX 11vi3

Hi

May be the passwd policy is implemented on the server.

the user root gets locked

you can check by

/usr/lbin/getprpw -m lockout root
if the 2 or 4 bit is 1 then it is expired or locked.

you can unlock the same by

/usr/lbin/modprpw -lk root
/usr/lbin/modprpw -lv root

Re: root disables after cold install of HPUX 11vi3

As this was on a test system so I decided to give the cold install another try. This time I selected install option without any user input. Post install I did not have the problem. The second system which had exhibited the same issue was also cold installed but with the advanced install option. Reinstalling with no user intervention on the second system did not reproduce the issue either. So I guess I'm ok now, and thanks to all for their input.
