rp8400 and missing processors

We bought an used HP rp8400 server for HP-UX scalability test usage. When I repartitioned the server to a single partition configuration I lost 2 CPUs. All memory installed on the same cell is still available.
Does anybody have any idea where I could find these missing CPUs?

Re: rp8400 and missing processors

Could you please let me know the no. of cell this box has.. Could you please paste the output of the "parstatus -C"

Do you have a icod installed on the box ??

Waiting for your reply...

Re: rp8400 and missing processors

it might be that although the cpus are physically there, but they're broken and have been deconfigured.

when the npar is booting - go into vfp and monitor the cells when they're booting; search for "E" on the left of the cell. additionally - you can check logs in MP (sl -> show logs) and seek for hw problems.

further - when you run ioscan: how many cpus do you see? and what if you run parstatus? what in stm? what in glance / top? what in syslog.log when system started? does all these sources show the same number of cpus?

Re: rp8400 and missing processors

Hi,

The best way is to use utilities like Partition Manager in SAM and stm from command line. You can alanyze the partition configurations. Sometimes the server disables the processors after the reconfigurations. You should be able to see those "disabled" processors using those tools. In order to understand the reason enter the MP and view the MP logs that correstpond to the processor tests/activation.

Re: rp8400 and missing processors

Ioscan does not show the missing ones. However I think that parstatus -C shows them, however they are not there as deconfigured.

They could be Icod CPUs, however if I run icod_stat, I cannot see them.

Some cut and paste:

# ioscan -fnkC processor

Re: rp8400 and missing processors

Hi,

You have all the CPUs on the box but while creating the partition you have not added the cell board 1 that is the reason you are not able to see those 2 CPUs.

ypu have to execute parmodify command and then add the cell board 1 as well in the current partition and then reboot the server.
I hope this will resolve the issue.

Re: rp8400 and missing processors

Sorry for the last reply....

there are only 6 CPUs installed on your ssytem..

Parstatus output shows that cell board 1 has only 2 CPUs, however it is capable of 4 CPUs.

So physically only 6 CPUs are present...

Re: rp8400 and missing processors

Both cells are fully configured (I looked inside the case). However, there are some errors in the SL log which have something to do with CPUs, so there might be a HW failure.
I'll need to consult the previous owner.

Anyway, thanks for all the responses.
