rx-8640 does not see tape drive

I have a rx8640 that does not see an external tape drive.

I made sure the 'tape' entry is in the /stand/system kernel configuration file.

But ioscan -fnC tape produces nothing. I tried insf to no avail.

Not a very detailed description of anything, in particular, the tape
drive model, and how it's connected to which adapter in the system.
Output from "uname -a" seldom hurts, either.

Does a less selective report show the adapter to which the tape drive
is connected?

As usual, a useful problem report would show exactly what you did,
and what happened whan you did it.  Vague descriptions, like "to no
avail" are more annoying than useful.

What model tape drive did you connect? And how did you connect it? USB will never work and fibre connections require some setup. Is it SCSI? Did you use the correct cable? Is it on a bus with other devices? Is the SCSI chain terminated?

Tape drive: HP storageworks ultrium 960

It works on another rx-8640 but on this particular one.  I connect via SCSI interface.

No other devices are connected via SCSI.

Re: rx-8640 does not see tape drive

Did you add a terminator to the tape drive?
What version of HP-UX are you running? (hint: uname -a)

What is the hardware path for the SCSI card?
Please post the output from: ioscan -f

Re: rx-8640 does not see tape drive

I got it to see the tape drive. I tried the other SCSI interface (again), did insf -e and ioscan -fnC tape revealed the devices.

Weird, it has been iffy on and off.  With another machine also. You have to try multiple times, removing, installing the SCSI cable before it can see it.

now I have to boot off the tape drive, it has  make_tape_recovery  image on it.

Beware that most Integrity machines cannot boot from tape. You will probably have to make a bootable CD with the ignite itools program on it.

Bad hardware can cause many symptoms.  If you're "removing,
installing" SCSI devices with the power on, without rebooting the OS,
then I might expect more problems.
