script that shows progress in a tar backup

Hi there --

Does anyone know of a way within a script to display the progress of a tar backup? Thanks.

Why not using tar -v?

Hi there --

Thanks for your reply. The -v option would indeed show on-screen what is being backed up during the operation.

What I am looking for is along the lines of percentage completed of the files that are being backed up.

That would imply some intelligence on the part of 'tar' to know beforehand how many files and/or how much data is being backed up.

'tar' has no such intelligence.

Hi there --

I think I found the solution with a third-party application known as clpbar.

Thanks anyway for the help.
