- what type are these files:
file
- what timestamp
- can you read the files (ascii-files with cat, binary-files with strings)
If I am to guess, I would say it looks like the temporary output from a skript with the Unix-Pid in the name

The files can be opened. They look like editor text files with timestamp from Sep to Dec 16, 2002.

Yes, I checked the ones on my systems and that's what they look like - editor save files.
You can cat them, more them, vi them, and safely delete them.

As Dennis noted, these are shell here-documents. Recovery files from the 'vi' editor can be found in '/var/preserve' and are named beginning with 'Ex'.
