Re: shutdown completely an HP-UX server

Ettore,

Oh, that's what you were asking! ;^)

Depending on your ups monitor, you may well have the option to specify whether it will come back on after the power is restored. See the man page for ups_conf and specifically the parameter "kill_after_shutdown".

Re: shutdown completely an HP-UX server

If this is happening unexpectedly it should be in the GSP log, some kind of problem.

We have run the unplug shutdown tests and seen the systems come down with a shutdown -h 0

This works if ups_mond.conf is set up properly.

This does not shut the ups itself down. That we have to do with the switches on the front.

Re: shutdown completely an HP-UX server

Pete and SEP, a question for you (and of course for ITRC people too):
If UPS dies and server with its configuration together then how does UPS know the option kill_after_shutdown, that is UPS must be turned OFF when AC line voltage comes back?

Re: shutdown completely an HP-UX server

The behavior of the UPS during a power failure where the batteries run out is very dependent on the model of the UPS and whether it has non-volatile RAM to remember optional settings. In the case of battery exhaustion, having the UPS come back up is seldom the right choice, especially if there are related services (like networking) that are on a separate UPS (or no UPS at all). Complete loss of power really needs humans to power things back on (like big disk arrays, tape changers, etc).
