Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

Hello,

Firstly, you must clean up /var file system
(unless /var/opt/ignite is a separate file
system).

Some sites decide to set up /var/opt/ignite
as a separate file system. Check it
on your server.

Without free space, all your efforts are waste
of time.

If you cannot clean up any files (which I am
pretty sure you can), then extend the
file system if you have unallocated space
in the volume group.

Cheers,

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

Hi,
Perhaps you need to do both.

1)house keep the /var.
2)get the Ignite past this error message to have a current Ignitge backup.
3)as VK2COT said it is always a noce practice to keep the /var/on a separate LV.
4)you can use this Ignite Image or one few days old to do an ignite restoration and extension of /var that is taking help of Ignite.
5)If you have enogh free space in the VG vg00 that you can check with the vgdisplay -v vg00 | grep -i -e "free" -e "Size"

find the PE size and Free PE and multiplay to get the free space in MB.
6)If you have Enogh free space in the VG, you can start the system in the single user mode, lvextend /var, followed by the extendfs and mount all the filesystems to check if /var/has been properly extended or not. Then go for a normal reboot.

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

dear sir,
i can't extend the file system. this is an old server hpux 11.00. we don't have online file system extension software.

sir, can i nullify these files:
# cd /var/adm/cron/log
# ls
-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 2852933 Jan 30 13:18 makrec.log2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 340304 Jan 30 13:18 makrec.log1

i have nullify the /var/mail,but not much space claim.

hope to hear from you. thank you

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

hi

these seem to be the Ignite Logs as being taken using cron. but that shall free only 2MB of space.
also suggested that you keep a backup of file at other location before you triom that file.
Of course the second method that i have suggested earlier thinking that you might not have the OnlinJFS installed.

I again say
1)check that you have enough free PEs and /or Enogh free space in the VG vg00.
2)if yes then you can reboot the system in the Sinle-user mode and do an unmount of /var and lvextend and extendfs on /var (LV that conatins /var).

Can you please give the present O/P s of

#bdf /var
#vgdisplay -v vg00
#lvdisplay -v /dev/vg00/ (the forst page)

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

Hi,

1) these logs seem to be the make_tape_recovery logs of Ignite as the name suggets.
2)before you ask for a downtime for the server for extending the /var.

check that the VG is having enough free PEs available in that with the command
#vgdisplay -v vg00 | grep -i Free
#vgdisplay -v vg00 | grep -i size

Multiply these two valuses and you shall be able to see the Free Space in MB for this VG that you can extend /var by.

If you do not have free space in the VG then I do not think takibg downtime shall be wise.

better if you can give the earlier asked command Outputs from your system.

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

dear sir,
the makrec.log2 makrec.log1 is used for backup. nothing to do with restore. even if i remove, later the tape still can be used to restore. tape has its own index right.

PE Size (Mbytes) 4
Free PE 1056

can i delete any of these file?
# find /var -xdev -size +2048
/var/opt/ignite/logs/makrec.log2
/var/opt/ignite/recovery/arch.include
/var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last
/var/opt/perf/datafiles/logtran
/var/opt/perf/datafiles/logglob
/var/opt/perf/datafiles/logappl
/var/opt/perf/datafiles/logproc
/var/opt/perf/datafiles/logdev

hope to hear from you. thank you

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

Hi

Also bdf /var would have been helpful .

So you are having aroung 4 GB pf space on your VG vg00 as free.

this space or a part of this can be assiged for the increase of the /var LV.

please also if possible then give the followig thins or check
1)#bdf /var
from here know what is the lvol on which the /var is mounted.

for this lvol
do
2)#lvdisplay -v /dev/vg00/

this shall tell you if the Policy for this LV is contiguous or not.

Please post the command outputs for 1) and 2) also.

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

i have make a copy and nullify these following files:
/var/opt/ignite/logs/makrec.log2
/var/opt/ignite/recovery/arch.include
/var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last
and i'm running the make_recovery now.

if we were to create another point and link the current /var, can we do that as interim solution since the we are going to migrate this old server to new hpux 11.23

hope to hear from you. thank you

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

Hi Apple,

please give me the O/Ps as i have requested earlier that will help us know more about the /var on the system.

It is OK that you are going to decommision the server, you have free space available in VG , The same thing that you want to create a new larger LV and mount and link present var.

you are not suggested to move /var out of the root VG that is vg00.

and in the root VG if you have spac available you can always increase the /var.

Please give the O/Ps as requested earlier and if you have doubts how to take into single user mode and do an lvextend and extendfs we can help you in that.

I again say give the O/Ps as required.

#bdf
#vgdisplay -v vg00
#lvdisplay -v /dev/vg00/

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

Hi Apple,

Its good that if the Ignite gets completed. The O/Ps as sent by you suggest that the Lvol8 is the var and now almost 1 GB free on the fileystem.

Also the vgdisplay and the lvdisplay say that /dev/vg00/lvol7 is 800 MB in size is mirrored with the strict policy but that has non-contiguous Distribution. Also the free space in the VG that is 4224 MB free.

So considering that all the space you can use in the VG to increase /var by 2112 MB because /dev/vg00/lvol7 that is var is a Mirrored LV.

so you can increase /var by 2112 MB that shall take the target size of /var from 800 MB to (2112 MB + 800 MB) apprx.

please tell once your Ignite backup on the tape is complete.
The Only problem with /var is that you cannot unmount this except the Single-usermode and that it is not suggested to keep /var out of root VG.

If you have an MP access of the server, this can be done easliy by going in the Single user mode also good to be on safe side always if you have an Ignite backup.

Re: the backup hang when writing to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/makrec.last

Hi

Apologies for mentioning /var as /dev/vg00/lvol8 inn the firdt line of the Earlier post.

As the O/ps sent by you confirm and the rest part of my earlier post the /var is /dev/vg00/lvol7.
