tztab info for Cairo

All,

On a HP-UX 11iv1, set_parms timezone allows me to select Africa/Cairo as local timezone.
/etc/TIMEZONE then contains TZ=CAT-2 which has no DST rules defined in tztab.

Does anyone know if this tztab info exists in some patch for Egypt?

Re: tztab info for Cairo

The common timezone name for Cairo is EET, also known as Eastern Europe Time. See:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/clockchange.html?n=53

There is an entry for EET but the comments are for Finland. See:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/clockchange.html?n=101

However, EET is correct for both Finland and Egypt. But as is typical for timezones around the world, the rules are different for daylight saving adjustments and keep changing for political reasons.

There is no tztab patch for Cairo. But the good news is that you can edit tztab and create a CAI and CAIDT (or EGT, EGY or EGP) or whatever you want to use as a name. See: man tztab and man environ. I would first verify that the above webpage rules for Cairo are accurate based on your knowledge of the current laws, then create the CAI entry. Note that the change information in the above web page is accurate but incomplete. The local law most likely defines the change rules as something like the third Thursday in April. The tztab entries are similar to crontab: min hr day month year weekday.

Re: tztab info for Cairo

Thanks Bill,
this matches my understanding.
I'll check for legal rules in Cairo, it looks like DST changes occur on third or last friday in april/september at 00:00.
