you can never upgrade cpu on a running server.
what is you server model?

ans is no. OS does not need to be reinstalled.

Re: upgrade h/w

Shalom,

Assuming it is a supported processor upgrade no OS re-install is needed. There may be some work on the system board NVRAM needed to support the upgrade and keep the box licensed properly licensed.

Re: upgrade h/w

What does "upgrade" mean?

Additional CPU?
Different CPU type?

Convert from RISC to Itanium (e.g. rp4440 to rx4640)?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Hi Balaji

As always depend whta you are trying to figured out.

If you need to swap CPUS's then you need a downtime.

Check if hardware is compatible.

Then do the switch.

Some software is licensed by CPU ID.
If you have any, make sure you have plans to address the change.

Re: upgrade h/w

Thank you all. The upgrade is from N series to RP series. I just want to know OS needs to be reinstalled or backup and restore should be fine with make_recovery. We are upgrading the os disks also, so i have to recover from mk_tape.

Even if it crashes, i have option of installing fresh from dvd.

Ignite restore is the best option

Re: upgrade h/w

"N series to RP series"

From N4000 to rp7400?

This *may* include a system board swap, maybe not - it depends on what you really have.

Make a backup for safety. Hope you won't need it.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: upgrade h/w

We have an RP4440 running 11.23 (HP-UX 11i v2) and wish to upgrade it to an RX4640 by replacing the two PA8800 cpu's with Itanium cpu's.

I see on another HP site that 11.23 supports Itanium, but will I need to reinstall the OS after replacing the cpu's? This is a production server and I want to minimize risk, but also want to avoid buying a new server if possible, and risk is minimal.

Anything else I need to be aware of? I would have an experienced HP support person doing this upgrade but wanted to seek feedback from this forum as well.

Thanks,
Clay
