How do I check for the version installed?

Use swlist and check the core OE components - must be September 2008 or later.

The version is July-09. I also looked in man pages for vgmodify but couldn't see the -a switch there.

It isn't a patch bundle but a new OE that you seek. The most recent OE's are from March 2010. If you have a support agreement, use the Software Update Manager (SUM) to order new OE media:

http://www.itrc.hp.com/service/sum/home.do

Once you have the new OE, use 'update-ux' to uplift your OE level with new *product* versions.

Then, use the standard SD tools ('swinstall', etc) to apply the most recent standard patch bundles for 11.31. These also have been refreshed in March 2010. You can obtain this bundle from the ITRC Patch Database or via the Software Assistant Tool (SWA). The later would be my choice.
