vxfs file system on eva exported from Red Hat Linux server

I am just wondering if this can be done with little effort or at all. HPUX will be end of life soon and I want to stand up a Red Hat Linux file server and export from it data that is in the HPUX vxfs file system format that I have on an eva. Can this be done with out data corruption, and read write ?

Thanks, Andrea

Re: vxfs file system on eva exported from Red Hat Linux server

Vishnu, what about a Susse Linux file server? Can I bring up this server and use my existing eva with an hpux filesystem? Some documents I have read suggest this can be done, but I am not sure.

Do I have any option?

Re: vxfs file system on eva exported from Red Hat Linux server

Shalom,

No, direct mount of HP-UX implementation of vxfs/JFS is probably not possible.

Data will need to be backed up and restored after Linux creates a new file system.

HP-UX end of life? Well 11.11 and 11.23 reach end of life December 31 2013. 11.31 is 2017.

More versions of HP-UX are planned.

Re: vxfs file system on eva exported from Red Hat Linux server

Thanks for the info about the end of life. It's realy that the vendor software that we use no longer certifies their app on HPUX, therefore we have to move to a supported platform.

With a resotre of the data, there is no data converstion that will have to take place? We have serveral TBs of data. What format is Red Hat or Susse linux? Do you know?

Re: vxfs file system on eva exported from Red Hat Linux server

Hi Andrea,

Its the little endian/big endian difference between a x86 architecture and itanium/pa-risc/sparc/powerpc architecture, that makes it, in imo, not possible to export a vxfs filesystem from a UNIX, hp-ux/solaris/aix, system, and import the vxfs filesystem on a linux/windows system, or vice versa. But you can always try. ;)

This was recently extended to 2020.

Re: vxfs file system on eva exported from Red Hat Linux server

With a resotre of the data, on a linux box will the data have to be converted to a "new format"? We have serveral TBs of data.

What format is Red Hat or Susse linux? Do you know?

Re: vxfs file system on eva exported from Red Hat Linux server

You can, of cxourse get VxFS for Linux, and there are ways in newer versions of VxFS of making the filesystem transportable across platforms....

But I bet that HPUX VxFS filesystem is sat on a LVM logical volume yes? There's no way that Linux will be able to interpret the format of that, so you'll never even get as high up the stack as VxFS...

Which leaves you with a backup/restore or using a NFS mount, both of which will certainly get the data onto your Linux box.

Whether the data can be read once its on the Linux box, I don't know - what's in all these files? Just ASCII text? Binary datafiles for some application... thats where you're most likely to have an issue...

Re: vxfs file system on eva exported from Red Hat Linux server

Thanks Duncan,
I am starting to really understand all this. Thank you!. The files that are stored on this data volume (eva) are primarly NX (Unigraphics) part files. Does this same concept applies for Susse Linux as well?
