Re: what is the purpose of the command "fuser"

fuser command lists the processes which are holding a file or directory open.

main use of this command is to eliminate the processes holding a filesystem from being unmounted.

'man fuser' can tell you much more than that but this is just the gist of it.

hello,
The purpose is to list tasks using files in file system .

please enter the command

man fuser

to get all the details

lsof is more reliable though

Re: what is the purpose of the command "fuser"

Hi:

As usual, do a 'man fuser' and find out more than I can type in a reasonable time.

If for some reason you don't have the manpages installed or if you are not near a server, use your favorite web browser to look to:

http://www.docs.hp.com/en/index.html

There are manpages for every supported release there!

You should learn to ask the manpages _FIRST_.

Hi Senthil Kumar,

>>what is the purpose of the command "fuser" <<

man fuser "will give much information"

fuser command is issued to check "which process currently holding on to you said file system"

example:-

fuser -u /tmp --> to check
fuser -k /tmp --> to kill curreny procees holding /tmp file system

I thought that it was a test to see if the
user knew enough to use "man".

Re: what is the purpose of the command "fuser"

Hi Senthil,

fuser â list processes using a file or file structure

Do a 'man fuser' and find out all your requirements. Or you can run through below links:

http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90691/fuser.1M.html

Re: what is the purpose of the command "fuser"

Hi Senthil,
The fuser command lists the process IDs of processes that have each specified file open. For block special devices, all processes using any file on that device are listed. The process ID can be followed by a letter, identifying how the file is being used.

you can see which user is accessing this disk
fuser -cu /dev/dsk/c201d1s

same as you can check on FS which user is using home
fuser -cu /home

you can kill all user who is using /home
fuser -ku /home

for more information see the man page or fuser
