what the appropriate DNS name I should use, and any side effect?
Now, if I use the node name "node.a.b.com-name.com" that we usually use on this site, is there any potential problems?
Thanks,

Re: what the appropriate DNS name I should use, and any side effect?
One potential problem is mail from node.a.b.com-name.com will not be accepted by public internet email servers.
You can make this work with DNS zone records supporting both domains you mention above.
HP-UX will not accept any section between periods being more than 8 characters unless you are 11i v2 and have extra software installed.

Re: what the appropriate DNS name I should use, and any side effect?
Can you please explore it a little bit more as for why node.a.b.comp-name.com will not be accepted by public inernet email servers?
I was concerning about the time spent on resolving the ip address, because it will go through the local dns server.
Anybody?

Re: what the appropriate DNS name I should use, and any side effect?
the hostname node.a.b.com-name.com does not resolve on the public Internet.
Try it, nslookup or dig node.a.b.com-name.com
Public mail servers often check two things.
1) Is there a valid reverse DNS lookup record.
2) IS the domain name valid.
If either test does not give a good answer, the mail is rejected, or worse yet dropped, making you think it got there, when it never did.

Re: what the appropriate DNS name I should use, and any side effect?
why if I use node.remotesite.domainname.com, then it will cause the email problem? On my local DNS domain server, can I still resolve node.remotesite.domainname.com ?
Also, whether or not I can send out the email is not my main concern, because we dont' send emails from servers anyway. My main concern is if there will be other issues.
Maybe I should repeat my question again.
usually, we give any new server name as "servername.localdominaname.com".
now, if I want to give the server name as "servername.remotesitedomainname.com", would that cause any problem? each site has its own dns server.
