what was that CDE dialog with the yes / no buttons
Does anyone rememember what cde command was used to make a little dialog window popup. It could be programmed to run a script as per the yes/no response?

I think you are looking for "/usr/dt/bin/dtfile_error"

What OS are you using?
Under 10=> I think it was called xdialog
or you could use dtksh
Else go and download
http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Gtk/Xdialog-1.4.1/
