Automatic Discovery

What exactly occurs during automatic discovery, and can this process be duplicated without using auto discovery?

Re: Automatic Discovery

Automatic discovery give you a choice of either an ICMP ping or a port 80 request. It will run through all of the addresses you supply looking for a response. If there is a response, the identification process takes over, basically playing '20 Questions' with the device to figure out what it is and what protocols are available.

If you do a manual discovery, the identification process runs as well.

I think you're really asking about identification, so what are you trying to figure out?

Re: Automatic Discovery

No, just wondering what processes take place. Would this be an accurate assesment?

If there is a response, then an identify task is performed.

In other words, is there any difference between running an identify on an item and having its ip contained in automatic discovery, when the item is aleady in SIM?
