HP server management

Hi,

We have an HP ML310e G8 server that we need to have the management software installed on for our RMM agents to communicate with. Our RMM company suggested the SIM. Looking at another HP server we have that has the management software on it, I cannot find any evidence of SQL on it.

I was wondering what would be the correct way to install the management system. SIM seems to require SQL but the other HP server with the management software does not have SQL.

Thank you.

Re: HP server management

You need HP SIM on a single server to collect and monitor all other devices. Then simply register the server-to-monitor ILO 4 with SIM and your monitoring is working. You may consider to install agentless management drivers to the servers.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HP server management

Thanks for the reply Torsten,

Does the SIM contain everything, including the agents?

Looking at the ml350 g6 server we have, it has the following:

HP Array Configuration Utility

HP Array Configuration Utility CLI

HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition for Windows

HP Insight Management Agents

HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility

HP ProLiant Integrated Management Log Viewer

HP ProLiant PCI-express Power Management Update for Windows

HP ProLiant Remote Monitor Service

HP Smart Array SAS/SATA Event Notification Service

HP System Management Homepage

HP Version Control Agent

And the ml310e g8 does not have any HP software installed.

Just trying to find out what I need for my RMM company to be able to get system alerts and send them to me. I think I will reach out to them tomorrow and see what they say.

Re: HP server management

You need to install HP SIM on the management server. Then install the agents to pre-Gen8 monitored servers and configure. For Gen8 and Gen9 you only need to register to ILO4, no agents needed.

Hope this helps!

Re: HP server management

Hello,

One addition to that, if you need os information like drivers etc. You would need the Agentless Management Service agent? I know that sounds silly but you would need tat one piece of software. Don't forget to configure the ILO to allow snmp read and traps and if needed use the server naam instead of the ILO name in case of sending traps. If you configure the SNMP settings reidentify the ILO to trigger the dstacollection for the server from ILO.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Re: HP server management

What about if the iLO is not configured ?

Does HP SIM can intelligently try the WBEM using the AD Domain Administrator account instead ?

Re: HP server management

Hello,

For any other than a Gen8 or higher you can use the WBEM discovery and trapping just fine. However since the Geb8 HP is moving to an Agentless approach for monitoring. The WBEM agent works but a lot of detail gets lost when you use the WBEM option on Gen8 and higher. All looks fine for a while but then you start losing information in the datacollection. If that's not a problem for you you could try to keep using WBEM with an agent.

Kind regards,

Andrew
