Error 1040: No devices specified or all devices are now offline

Hi,

One of our Customer use HP Data Protector Express 4.00 SP1 to make backup on an internal tape drive (HP DAT 160 SAS) and everything is setup on a HP Z400 Workstation (Windows 7 Pro 32bits). Tape drive is connected to a LSI-SAS PCI-E controller from HP (SAS3442E-HP).

They face some issue with backup it's like Windows stop seeing the tape drive. Backup can work one day and then next day it's finish with this error:

Error 1040: No devices specified or all devices are now offline

and all subsequent backup will fail with the same error and if I go to device manager I can see the controller but not the tape drive. I only reboot the computer and the tape drive reappear in the device manager and Backup can work again but we face this issue many time.

When I can't see tape drive in device manager I tried to click on detect new device but that don't do anything and if I go in the event viewer I get these two events:

The driver and the firmware of the Tape Drive are already up to date.

The Tape Drive and SAS controller have been changed but we are still facing this issue.

Did Somebody already face the same issue or have an idea why Windows stop seing the Tape Drive and what can I do?

  Thanks!

Hi,

Finally In our case the problem was the tape drive again.

They change it again and now everything is OK.

Good Lock!
