2 x 2/20 Libraries instead of a 4/40 ?

Hi y'll

Can't seem to find one of these...
4/40 library LVD with 4 x DLT8000 drives

Would it be the same thing to supply...
2 x 2/20 Libraries LVD each with 2 x DLT8000 drives?

[The aim being to connect each drive to its' own dedicated card on the host]

Re: 2 x 2/20 Libraries instead of a 4/40 ?

Mike,

From what I can tell, the net effect will be the same. Quoting from my (somewhat outdated) Configuration Guide:

"A dedicated HVDS and LVDS SCSI F/W host bus adapter installed in the server is required for these products for each DLT-8000 or Ultrium 230 drive. Users may find that other SCSI devices connected to the dedicated SCSI bus acutally work, but HP does NOT support such configurations."

The "for each" drive part leads me to believe this will be exactly what you want.

The throughput to/from tape will be the same. What you are giving up is the size of the common media pool. You would find that a single library with 40 slots gives you more choices than 2 smaller pools. The other minor difference is that your are now "burning" 2 slots for cleaning cartridges where before your were using only 1. Depending upon the software you are using, your licensing costs could also be greater running 2 libraries as opposed to 1.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Pete & A. Clay

Works for me
I appreciate the point about the "media pool" & cleaning

Thanks for the rapid responses

First of all, the 4/40 is two 2/20s stacked together, with a vertical list added to the robotic arm.

Secondly, the 4/40 is a discontinued product, which explains why you are having trouble finding one.

for current HP products.. Something like the StorageWorks MSL5052SL might fit your need better.
