8 GB Tape Drive Can't Read Data from Jumbo 250 Tape

We're trying to resurrect some old data from a Jumbo 250 tape using a HP Colorado 8GB internal tape drive on a W95 machine (w/ Colorado Backup II software). The good news is that the drive can identify the tape, list the catalog, and show everything that is on the tape. However, when I go to restore the data, it goes through the files I want and then tells me that the media cannot be read or contains invalid data. How so if it has no problem reading the catalog, tape identifier, file names, etc.?

The tape was probably made with Qbackup.exe in a DOS environment (about 1996). I'm wondering if maybe a software compression issue is the problem. Does anyone know where old versions of Qbackup can be had? The original computer and Jumbo 250 drive were donated to/disassembled by my son's Cub Scout den last year as part of their communications unit! Anyone know of services that can resurrect old data tapes?

Thanks,

Paul F.
