Backup exec 9.1

I have 1 backup exec media tape version 8.6 that I need to read and restore 1 file with. my new backup exec version is 9.1 and has no prior knowledge of the old backup. Does anyone know how I might restore 1 file from the old version. I have been trying to generate a catalog but it keeps asking for a different media.
