Backup halting when magazine is opened

Hello,

I have a 4/40 DLT library with 4 DLT drives. Sometimes, when a magazine is opened while there is a backup running on one of the drives, the backup just halts.

Any idea why this is happening?

Thanks,
Vince

Re: Backup halting when magazine is opened

Hi Vincent.
There is a protective switch in that library,
that prevents any operation of the library in case doors or bays are opened.
This is a feature to protect your fingers from being cut off.

Re: Backup halting when magazine is opened

Hi Vincent,

I used a 4/40 at the previous place I was at
and had complaints by operators that backups
were halting. When I went there (different
building) I discovered that in this model
there is a locking mechanism for when any door
has opened. (as mentioned by Alexander)
The new procedures were written in such a way
"Keep fingers and hands out of the tape library. If you wish to keep them!"

I'm not sure why but these procedures are
still in place. :^))

Re: Backup halting when magazine is opened

Thanks for your information. A few more clarifications please.

You mentioned the locking mechanism. Can you override this mechanism so that it does not work?

Also, I don't understand how the 4/40 can cut off your fingers. How can this happen?

If you enter a tape in the mailslot, does this happen as well? Can backup be halted by any other thing besides this?

Re: Backup halting when magazine is opened

Hi Vincent.
If you try to do something with the library and just at that moment the robot start the tape transport, it becomes dangerous for the mechanism as well as for your fingers. These two items could get jammed somehow.
I have done a job as a telecom techie and repaired tty's and i was happy about these protective things.

Re: Backup halting when magazine is opened

If the safety precaution wasn't there, the library will close the magazine door on its own?

Re: Backup halting when magazine is opened

HI there.
I do not think so.
There may be several levels of these switches.
One to switch off on open door, one to prevent
any robot action on open door.
There may be more.

Re: Backup halting when magazine is opened

The library door interlock is provided for a few reasons: First, to prevent any safety hazards due to moving parts (i.e. prevent pinched fingers). Second, to prevent the library from encountering a move failure while the tape drawers are being moved. When the drawer(s) are open, the library will report 'not ready door(s) are open' to the host when sent move or inventory commands. Typically the host ISV software can handle this situation, and provides an appropriate operator message.

This condition can be avoided by locking the drawers.
The journey IS the reward.
