Yes it can. DLT8000 is backward-compatible with DLT4000.

Thanks for your answer. Can an Ultrium drive read a tape created from a DLT4000?

No you can't. The Ultrium tape media are physically smaller than the DLT4000/7000/8000 series. So no, you can't.
