can you not set the compression rate on the front panel?
If it is set to 80Gb a new tape should be format to that density.
Besides that I don't think there is a patch/switch/file you can set.

the DLT80 has a density select button.
Am I looking at the wrong manuals?

I am using DLT VS 80 tape of HP storageworks 1/8 Autoloader. And the frontpanel in it doesnot have any density settings as i have mentioned in the query initially.

As we don't have a VS80 on site, I can't suggest anything else.
Perhaps best to contact HP directly, chances are an engineer would be able to confirm straight away.
