We have a compaq proliant 3000 with an Internal Compaq 20/40GB DLT tape drive.
The tape drive has begun to make problems. The following leds are all the time going on and off with a tape
*Write protected (Red led)
*Tape in use (Yellow led)
*Use cleaning tape (Yellow Led)
*Operate handle (green led)
I can try to unload the tape many times, and suddenly I can get the tape out - but I have to push the unload button many times.

Solution
Hi,
Looks like some kind of hardware problem. I belive your drive is rather old, maybe it has reached its end of life. If you consider replacing the drive, you should notice that there may be compatiblity problems with DLT4000 formatted medias and the newer DLT VS80 drives. DLT4000 medias must be degaussed before used in a DLT VS80 drive. DLT8000 drives is fully compatible with DLT4000 medias but seems not longer avialable from HP (but, is avialable as QUANTUM products).

It may be you have a "Dropped leader" on your DLT drive:
