DDS-4 Tapes on HP SureStore Dat8i Device

I'm trying to get a DDS-4(40G) Tape to run on an HP SureStore Dat8 backup device. When I insert the tape, it attempts to read for a few seconds, then ejects the tape. Even though the device is rated for DDS-2(8G), my boss tells me he "got it to work", but can't seem to explain how. I've had no luck getting it to work with either Windows 2k or Veritas 8.5 or 8.6 drivers. Any suggestions?

Re: DDS-4 Tapes on HP SureStore Dat8i Device

Sergei,

It's been a while since I've worked on one of these. However, if memory serves correctly, the behavior associated to inserting a DDS-4 tape into a DDS-2 tape drive is for the drive to automatically eject the tape. Have a look at the supported media at the following URL:

See page 25.

I fear your boss is confused.

A big selling point for DDS4 drives was that you could (usually) use DDS2 or DDS3 tapes in them as well as DDS4's. They are backward-compatible.

I cannot imagine how to make a tape format forward-compatible.

http://www.fujifilmmediasource.com/ddshist.asp

is just one of a multitude of sites that have compatibility charts. No DDS4 (150M) tapes in a DDS2 drive, I'm afraid.

Re: DDS-4 Tapes on HP SureStore Dat8i Device

Hello,

You just cannot do that. The drive is behaving correctly when it ejects the tape.

If a drive is DDS2, it reads only DDS2 or LOWER, not greater. For DDS4 tapes, you need a DDS4 drive, simple.
