DL380 G3 win 2003 wont find my Ultrium 2 Tape Drive

I'm connecting with vhdci lead. The tape and lead work, i tried it on another serverwhich is already setup(Dell machine though).
The HP just wont show the tape unit in 'devices' and when i try to install driver it just says device not there, or to that effect. I have rebooted the server ??
HAs anyone been through this one?

I assume your tape drive is locally attached - what adapter do you have it connected to ? - if you plugged it into the back of the Proliant, you may have connected it to the internal RAID controller. is the tape drive functionally OK ? - (does the Dell box report it correctly under device manager ?)

Tony,

please be sure you're running a supported configuration:

##Compatible Controllers & Host Bus Adapters##

This tape drive can be connected to this server by one of the following adapters:

Embedded Smart Array 5i controller (external and hot-plug tape drives only)
374654-B21 - Single channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA G2
268351-B21 - Dual channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA (Retired)
284688-B21 - Dual channel Ultra3 SCSI HBA* (Retired)

next step, check that the tapedrive is found during POST!

* Please ensure the adpu160m.sys driver Version 6.1.640.100 or higher (available from www.compaq.com/support) is used in this configuration.

Cheers

Also be sure you do not have another device on this controller (may be also internaly) wich is set with the same scsi ID

Re: DL380 G3 win 2003 wont find my Ultrium 2 Tape Drive

OK.
Thanks for your suggestions so far.

The machine doesnt report or see it in POST.
The adpu160 driver is for w2000 and wont install. cant find a 2003 one. ?
Yes, its plugged into the back at a socket labelled 'vhdci'.
I cant find a device or driver called 'vhdci' in windows2003. This might account for something..

Re: DL380 G3 win 2003 wont find my Ultrium 2 Tape Drive

the HBA and the drive should be seen in the bios of the HBA, that should display the enquiry string during the boot process.

If you do not see the lto during the boot time, there is a hardware problem.

You should check for any ID conflict on the scsi bus
You should check all the connectors of the cable, drive and terminator for any bent/broken pin
you should check that terminator is LVD, as all the components of the scsi chain.

when the Drive will appear during boot scan, you can start troubleshooting with your OS

Re: DL380 G3 win 2003 wont find my Ultrium 2 Tape Drive

Does the drive appear during server boot?

I'm not sure about the dl380 G3, if the external connector can be used internaly in case Duplex mode is used for HDD.

To avoid any problem, insert a dedicated scsi HBA to be used for your external LTO2 drive

Thanks I might do that.
