We have one of these libraries that has become rather unreliable with hardware transport errors. We have found that the odometer registers over 18,000,000 tape swaps. Does this seem an excessive number of swaps?

Alun,
seems rather high considering the average DLT tape life time is about 500,000 passes or 100 full back ups.
How did you find your 18M figure? And what is your backup config?

If the transport is getting tired now - it's deserved.

This is a mechanical part - there is a wearout too.

I do not know where you got this value, but assuming you run the library for 10 years, every days, I would says that 5000 tape swap per day is not real.
probably these are the movements and not tape swap.
as the robotic is just one part, if it get old, you still can replace it. Analysis of the errors can tell you what is going worse

A number like that means that somehow the number was corrupted or not set in manufacturing. I've seen a few that didn't get set right in manufacturing.

If you are having transport errors make certain you are running 1.72 firmware (or newer if any newer is ever released). At a very mimimum anybody with transport errors needs to be running 1.50 firmware.

In 1.50 there were some routines added that perform transport track maintenance by performing specific move sequences on a schedule. The additional movement significanty increases the life of the transport.
