DLT drive (Compaq 35/70) parity errors

I have an external tape drive (the above-mentioned model, connected to a PC running SuSE 9.3 professional Linux. The SCSI card is a Symbios Logic SYM8750SP.

The device is detected by the SCSI Bios without difficulty, during the POST phase, but when the operating system boots, SCSI Parity errors roll up the boot screen. Finally the OS reports a time out, resets the SCSI bus and then hangs.

Any suggestions/solutions gratefully received...

Re: DLT drive (Compaq 35/70) parity errors

Is the bus terminated on both ends?

Is the drive jumpered to provide term power?

Also make sure the connections are tight, and prior to that check that there are no bent pins.

thanks for the reply.

I've managed to sort it out by going into the SCSI bios' settings and turning off parity checking. Drive is now recognised and works fine.

Just a word of caution - you may be covering up a problem by turning off parity checking, since the DLT drives do generate the SCSI parity bit (that setting is for old devices that may not have implemented parity).

I'd run a test backup, restore, and compare at a minimum to have some confidence that there's no underlying issue.

good point, as it happens I am testing the drive as we speak...
