DLT vs. LTOII

Doing and ROI for moving from DLT to LTO II.

Does anyone know how much a DLT backs up per minute on average VS. LTOII?

Re: DLT vs. LTOII

Depends which DLT you mean. The following site indicates DLT7000 trasnfer rate of 5MBps with 35GB native capacity.

http://www.zsource.com/PRODUCTS/Quantum/Quantum_DLT7000/quantum_dlt7000.html

The following site indicates LTO II has a transfer rate of 30MBps and 200GB native capacity.

(There are probably hP pages that show the same thing, but this is what I found with a quick Yahoo! search.)

Re: DLT vs. LTOII

Which DLT drives/media are you using? It depends on your drive and whether is DLTIV, SuperDLT, etc.

Try looking and Quantum's web site, they have a lot of documentation and compatibility guides there:

Re: DLT vs. LTOII

A SDLT usually have a NATIVE performance of 16.0MB/s.

LTO-1 15.0MB/s NATIVE

LTO-2 35.0MB/s NATIVE

LTO-3 80MB/s NATIVE

Have a look at this chart. This should answer your questions.

One more for the list:

This lists older drives as well. Not that you need that now, but it may come in handy sometime.

Re: DLT vs. LTOII

I suggest forgetting about the transfer rate and concentrate on the reliability. We moved from SCSI DLT7000 to Fiber Optic LTO2 and found our lives got MUCH MORE PRODUCTIVE because we no longer had tons of problems to wrestle with on a daily basis. I would NEVER recommend anyone use DLT unless they had no other option available to them. If you have the opportunity to go with LTO2, GO FOR IT!

Re: DLT vs. LTOII

With the TL891/2 we could get about 9.1 MB/s. Testing Ultrium 2 448 drives we were seeing about 39.5 MB/s.

Re: DLT vs. LTOII

Sorry to be a fly on other folks' ointment but you may as well take a look at factors like backward compatibility. I am sure for compliance's sake you will still be required to have the ability to read and restore your thousands of DLT media.

The DLT camp has the adavantage of being able to still read your old DLT tapes while bringing you the speed and capacity of its newer generation drives. I think current generation DLTs now gives the LTO camp serious competition in the speed and capacity arenas.
