DLT7000/DLT8000 performance

We have a mixture of DLT7000 and DLT8000 drives across multiple HP servers. Any ideas where i can find performance figures for each type of drive?

Or, does anyone have any anecdotal evidence of how much quicker a DLT8000 is compared to a DLT7000?

Here is a website that you can compare the specs of both.

Hello Pete,
install HP Library and Tape Tools ( http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50128.html )and run perfomance test. This way you'll test not only your drives, but also your systems :-)

Re: DLT7000/DLT8000 performance

Hello,

DLT7000 => 5Mb/s native speed (10Mb/s compressed)
DLT8000 => 6Mb/s native speed (12Mb/s compressed)

Re: DLT7000/DLT8000 performance

And just a caution: DLT7000/8000 are very fast so they depend heavily on the computer's ability to strem the data continuously. And that streaming capability can easily be interrupted by slower disks, multi-user activity and sharing the tape drive on the same bus as disks.

The loss of throughtput from these delays is typically 10:1 to 50:1. Some tape drives can keep stats on stream failures--you'll need a program from the tape drive manufacturer to read these stats.

Re: DLT7000/DLT8000 performance

Hi

I have never reached the specified 12MB/s with DLT8000 drives (at best I got about 8.5-9MB/s). This was not depending to some other bottlenecks as when testing with a LTO drive and exact the same enviroment I could easily reach 30MB/s.
