EML E-Series sending 10.255.255.255 broadcast

We're running an HP EML E-Series on a Class-C network. Our network team has informed me that it is sending out broadcast over the IP 10.255.255.255, even though its NIC is correctly configured as class c. Anyone ever seen this?

Check the network cabling. You may have one of the internal only network ports connected to your publich network. The library is only supposed to broadcast on the private internal network.

Re: EML E-Series sending 10.255.255.255 broadcast

Thanks. I finally got around to checking this today; it looks like the only port plugged into our internal network is the "Network" port on the EML; all the other ports are plugged into an isolated switch that only the tape drives and the EML itself are plugged into. So whatever's broadcasting that is doing it through the "Network" port

Re: EML E-Series sending 10.255.255.255 broadcast

I checked with our expect on that product and was told that if the subnet mask is set too open then the broadcast messages for the internal network can get sent on the external network as well.

Check the subnet mask and see what it's set to.

Re: EML E-Series sending 10.255.255.255 broadcast

Where would I find that? I can find the IP's of the tape drives by right-clicking a drive and clicking "Properties", but I can't find a subnet mask listed anywhere. Nor does the help file seem to have much info on this.

Pull an Interface Manager Support ticket.
Look at the section ifconfig
for eth0 make sure the Broadcast address is set to: Bcast:0.0.0.0

Ok, I'm trying to look at the ltd file generated by the ticket, but I'm just getting garbage characters. Do I need to download some kind of app to read these?

You need to get a copy of Library and Tape tools to view. Use this like to find a free download

attach your support ticket for me to read

Re: EML E-Series sending 10.255.255.255 broadcast

Got it. I checked and it looks like the broadcast address is indeed set to 10.255.255.255, not 0.0.0.0. How can I change this, though? I checked in Commandview TL, and while I can alter the IP address and subnet mask (both of which appear to be correct) I do not see a way to alter the broadcast address.

Re: EML E-Series sending 10.255.255.255 broadcast

Can I ask a few more question.
Did you EML get it's IP address from DHCP or was it a manual one?
What firmware revisions on the library and the Interface Managers?
