Only new tapes (from any vendor), that have never been used anywhere else except this drive, should be used in it. I don't know if this is related to your problem, but you mention that the tapes work in other DLT drives.
When I have seen this problem, if you try to put a tape catridge formatted on a DLT4000 into a VS80 drive, it will hum and whir and click and then eject the cartridge with an error (invalid format or something).
