No it is not possible to do a firmware update to the library portion using a tape. You need to use L&TT http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools

If you get a failure post the file "EventLog" from the /logs directory.

Curtis,

Thank you for the reply.

I am attaching the log from the failed update. It looks like the the update broke the SCSI Bus.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 autoloader firmware update failed

Have you tried power cycling the library to make certain it comes back with the old firmware?

After a power cycle if the library is still running the old firmware try to download again and just select the library this time (unselect the check box for the drive if it wants to update). The drive should be up to date and not want to update.

Please post information about what server hardware, OS, and HBA type you are using.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 autoloader firmware update failed

I power cylced the library and and tried to unload the tapes. It is still giving me and "Error 90".

The operating system is a Windows 2003 R3, Hardware is an HP DL380. HPA is smart array 6i.

Did you retry the firmware update after the power cycle?

I don't know if a firmware update will help with the problem but you should be able to complete a firmware update successfully.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 autoloader firmware update failed

Good Morning Curtis,

The option to update the firmware is "grayed out" on the LTT. It looks to me like the Library firmware update damaged the Library SCSI connection.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 autoloader firmware update failed

Make certain that L&TT has been completely closed and the library power cycled then restart L&TT. If the firmware option is still greyed out then post the L&TT EventLog file.

I followed the above instructions and no luck. I am posting the eventlog.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 autoloader firmware update failed

Your autoloader is connected to the smart array 6i?

Have a look:

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/techdoc/ebs/EBSMatrix-0907.pdf

"Autoloaders, MSL 2024, MSL 4048, and MSL 8096 are not supported with SMART Array Controllers"

"SMART Array Controllers do not support attachment to tape automation products."

I guess this is the reason for your problem - you need another SCSI HBA.

BTW, error 90 is Mechanical Initialization failure - so I think you have multiple reasons for your problem.

This matrix may help you to find a HBA:

http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/ISS/13-0003-0002.html#matrixtable

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 autoloader firmware update failed

I don't see any indication of the library or the drive in the attached L&TT event log but I also do not see a SCSI adapter listed in the event log so the previous poster is probably correct.

If the drive is connected to this server it is connected to an array controller and that won't work.

I'm surprised that you would have been able to get to the firmware update function though if attached to an array controller so it seems like something is missing.

Also as the previous poster indicated error 90 is a mechanical positioning error so a firmware update may not fix it. If the library were mine and out of warrenty I would take the cover off and check to see if there was something like a label on the top of a tape causing the mech to get stuck. Labels aren't allowed on the tops of tapes but yet we see that a lot.

Re: HP Storageworks 1/8 autoloader firmware update failed

Ok, let me give you a little background.

This tape drive was originally connected to a server at the data center downtown. It is not possible for me to work on it when it is downtown so I brought it back to the office. I connected it to the server here using the builtin SCSI on the DL380. OOPs, It looks like I need to get a standard SCSI card for the server here at the office and reconnect the library. I should have this done to day.

I am sorry for the confusion.
