If a tape drive gets a stuck tape it can go offline and generate other ysptoms, (like IO errors)... sound sliek the drive is having a mounting issue???

Perhaps a replacement might be needed...

Any update on what happened with this drive?

Thanks for the reply. The drive has thrown the same error with a number of different tapes. Some were brand new. It appears that a system reboot clears the problem for a day or so but it inevitablly returns in the middle of a backup!

At the moment we're backing up to external hard drive. I fear the HP drive's days could be numbered ...

You can also try this. Go to cmd propmt at type vssadmin list writers.

You need to look at the status of the WMI writer. If this is not 1 Stable then this is your probelm You need to check this before rebooting your pc after a failed backup.
