HP Tape Tools cannot recognize LTO Ultrium 3 Tape Drive

Hi,

Recently, we have installed internal LTO Ultrium 3 Tape drive into HP ML350G6 server using HP Smart Array P212/Zero Memory Controller. Tape drive and controller successfully recognized in Device Manager but once I used HP Tape Tools to recognize tape drive, it failed to detect the tape drive.

Tape drive LED light ON at the ‘READY’ column, but still HP Tape Tools is not able to detect this tape drive.

By the way, I have 2 controllers in the server, not sure whether this causes the problem.

If you are running Windows 2003 then ensure you install the microsoft hotfix ::

Hi Ganz,

Thanks, have followed the instructions given and now the HP Tape Tools can recognize the tape drive but there is still a warning when I choose the tape drive.

Error message from hp L&TT: The diagnostic functions are operating in restricted mode. Some functions may be disabled or limited while operating in restricted mode. The restricted mode is entered if either the Product ID is not properly recognized, or if the device operates in "boot cache" and requires a firmware update.

A few steps to troubleshoot are ::

1. Verify that the tape drive is seen during POST.
2. Stop Removable Storage Manager Service from the microsoft services console.
3. Stop the backup application services ( Data protector/Netbackup/Tivoli Storage Manager).
4. Ensure you have the latest version of Library and Tape Tools ( v4.10). (Download from http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools . Run the tool again and check if the drive is accessible.
