I have somewhat the same problem and the same scsi controller, I've been troubleshooting this thing for a long time now and I have basically written all my experaince in my question, the thread is called "help with compression?!"

Good luck!

If you find the problem though, don't forget to post it here so maybe I can fix my over 1 year old problem....

Another post within this forum might have the answer to your troubles, I'm having the same problem with Windows 2000, no compression. Hopefully this help you...

Re: HPC1533A Compression

Lack of DDS drive hardware compression can be due to many factors:
1) Data is already compressed and so can't be compressed further
2) Compression is disabled by switches 1&2 under the drive (see manual)
3) Bad media causing many write retries
The best way to check if the drive hardware compression is enabled and working is to run the "Compression test" within HP Library & Tape Tools. Download it from http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50128.html
