Initialize tape drive

Hello,

I am using two different Compaq / HP Unix OS.
Compaq Digital and
HP TRU64.

I have one problem with the two.
Doing a mt -f /dev/nrmt0 status on one of my tape drives gives this error message.

0x3200 Device inoperable (needs intialize)

What is the procedure to initialize the tape drive?

Power off/power on the drive, then reboot OS.

If the error still occurs, then probably the drive has hardware failure

make sure the device is on during server boot up or it will not detect the device. Also make sure cables do not have bent pins and termination is correct and working.
