I thought there was no difference in brands 'cept for the name

As a matter of fact, I think they do make them, along with a number of other manufacturers--multi-supplier availability was part of the original intent of the LTO specification developed jointly by HP, IBM, and Seagate.

But if you thought they were all the same, why didn't you buy the available "Maxell or Blah Blah"?

Traditionally there have been relatively few manufacturers in the storage world, more so with drives than with media. In the early 8mm world, every drive was a Quantum inside, no matter what the label said.

The LTO specification and licensing agreement were designed to entice a large number of manufacturers of both drives and cartridges, and it seems to be working.

I'm going with HP drives because they can be added to my server support contracts. There's probably no significant value-add in using HP tapes, but they cost me only a couple bucks more each, so I'm going with them.
