MSL5026SL tape library not reading DLT8000 tapes

Hello,

We have a customer who just bought a one-drive MSL5026SL with the premise that he will be able to read his DLT8000-created tapes. So far, he never suceeded. He tried more than one tape but to no avail. Errors range from immediate "bad media type", to 45 minutes for the drive to try to synch with the tape IV media format to no avail.

I understand that there are SDLT drives which are NOT backward compatible to DLT IV media tapes. Is the drive contained in MSL5026SL library such a case in point? He is using ArcServe software for backup.

Any hints will be more than appreciated!

Regards,
Vince

Re: MSL5026SL tape library not reading DLT8000 tapes

Hi,
As I can read from the specifications dhe drives should be compatible with DLT IV media. Is there perhaps a blocksize mismatch. I don't know much about Archserve, is it possible to change blocksize for a drive ?

Leif,

They both should be 32K no? I mean, SDLT and DLT8000 blocksizes...

Re: MSL5026SL tape library not reading DLT8000 tapes

Hi,
My idea was if the tape was created (the DLT 8000 drive) with a different blocksize then the setting for the SDLT drive. I don't know if this is possible with ArchServe (it is with OmniBack).

Re: MSL5026SL tape library not reading DLT8000 tapes

Hello,

Not that I don't beleive you guys who answered, but I want confirmation... should the SDLT drive in an MSL5026SL be backward-compatible to DLT8000? I've read threads over here about this, about never managing to do it...

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/0,,0xe25d0fe6d0f7d61190050090279cd0f9,00.html

I need someone from HP to confirm me this please.

Points will be assigned later.

Thanks in advance,
Vince

Standard rules, step one, question one, is the system plugged in? Rule No 2., ask: Have you rebooted the system? Works more times than I would like to acknowledge, it is all just magic anyway!
