Require right config of MSL connectivity

Hello Team,

We have (HP) a Client and he is having a MSL6060 stoarge Library, It is connected to a Compaq Desktop d220 with LSI 2000 series Ultra320 PCI controller from day when it was installed, this desktop system is connected to servers vi network only and the CU use the Symantec Veritas Backup software.

Now the main issue is when ever CU is taking backup one of the ultrim drive give error while writing to media, updated MSL and drives firmware to available latest one but unable to down the library to swap and test the drives.

Is it above mentioned connectivity of MSL through PC is proper or incorrect?

Please reply

Re: Require right config of MSL connectivity

From what you explain, one of the cause may be a wrong cabling of the MSL6060 if you are using LTO3 drive.
you should follow these rules if you have a MSL6060 with LTO3 drives:

- you should connect only one LTO3 per scsi channel, this mean you need a dual port HBA or two HBA

- the terninator of the scsi chain should always be put on the LTO drive canister, this mean that scsi chain where the library controller is daisy chained with the drive, the cabling should be do like this: HBA >> Lib_Controller >> LTO_Drive >> Terminator

Re: Require right config of MSL connectivity

Hi
But you didn't slove my another query from same questaion & it is that, it is advisible that the MSL library should be connect with server only or it may be properly work with PC too?

What is the proper connectivity advised (recommended) by HP through server or and PC?

Re: Require right config of MSL connectivity

Sorry I misunderstood the question.
There is a compatibility matrix for the library support: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/techdoc/ebs/EBSMatrix-0207.pdf
Usually the fact that you use a PC or a Server is irrelevant, what you should check is the HBA used, the OS, the backup application and see if they are listed as supported in the matrix. Also the matrix will tell you the Firmware of the HBA, and the drivers /OS /backup application version supported

Re: Require right config of MSL connectivity

Just make sure he uses the drivers from Veritas and not the ones provided by HP, BackupExec is very picky.
