Storage Boards Cleanup
To make it easier to find information about HPE Storage products and solutions, we are doing spring cleaning. This includes consolidation of some older boards, and a simpler structure that more accurately reflects how people use HPE Storage.

SAN Backup

We here are using a MSL 6030 Tape library for backups with netbackup at the software end. The servers are connected in SAN , but still the backups are taken through LAN. Can anyone suggest how to configure a SAN backup or how can i come to know that the backup are taken through SAN or LAN

Re: SAN Backup

Netbackup has a different license policy for LAN / SAN backup.

So you need to buy a SAN based netbackup license

Re: SAN Backup

Are you asking about a backup in which no data moves between the NetBackup Server and Client? That would require NDMP or something similar. It would depend very much on whether your disk storage array supports such an arrangement. Even though you have multiple servers connected to the same SAN, a NetBackup client/server exchange is always going to take the network path unless you have NDMP-capable disk storage.

Re: SAN Backup

NDMP that one user mentioned is certainly an option in some cases.

Some vendors, such as EMC/Legato, also have an option where you can purchase "SAN Storage Nodes" along with a "Dynamic Drive Sharing" option.

The end result is that you can take fibre based tape drives and pass them to certain nodes that are also on your fabric with access to the same tape drives, and allow them to back their data up directly. The only thing going over the network at that point is the cataloging data.
