Storage Boards Cleanup
To make it easier to find information about HPE Storage products and solutions, we are doing spring cleaning. This includes consolidation of some older boards, and a simpler structure that more accurately reflects how people use HPE Storage.

SDLT connected on Ultra320 Adapter

I use :
A Proliant DL 380 G4 with win 2k3 server and BE10
A HP 64-bit/133-MHz 2 ch Ultra320 SCSI Adapter
A Overland library neo 2k with 2 SDLT 320

The SDLT 320 is a ultra 2 wide LVD peripheral.
with insight manager or System Management the Current Speed indicated is Asynchronous.

The new hp U320 is it compatible with ultra2 wide peripherals ?
Is it better to use an old Utra2 controler with SDLT 320 ?
BackupExec works but I imagine that with good speed negotiation the performance is better

It should be, but for specific (tested) product support look at the compatability tables:

http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/index.html

It lists the following HBAs:
268351-B21 - Dual-Channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA
374654-B21 - Single-Channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA G2
284688-B21 - Dual-Channel Ultra3 SCSI HBA

Is yours in that list?

I wonder if there is a reporting problem in Insight Manager on the synchronous transfer negotiation for data phases.

You could install HP LTT (www.hp.com/support/tapetools) and run the device performance test to see what throughput you get to the drive. I don't think asynch mode would provide more than a few MB/sec, at best. You should get close to 16MB/sec sustained with the SDLT320 drive (native) if it is negotiating for synchronous transfers.
The journey IS the reward.

Re: SDLT connected on Ultra320 Adapter

Hello,
The SDLT320 drive is compatible with the Proliant DL380 G4 and with BE10 with the last update.
I don't see a page to check the compatibility between the scsi card and the drive.
the scsi card is a 268351-B21.

the result with LTT tool :
Testing with Zeros
...
4096 MB written in 252 seconds at 16 MB/s
Testing with 1.6:1 Compression Ratio
...
4096 MB written in 253 seconds at 16 MB/s
Testing with 2:1 Compression Ratio
...
4096 MB written in 252 seconds at 16 MB/s
Testing with 3:1 Compression Ratio
...
4096 MB written in 252 seconds at 16 MB/s

with this result, do you think that the card works in Asynchronous mode or it's a bad information from management tools ?

Why, in the test speed isn't better with compression ?

regards

Re: SDLT connected on Ultra320 Adapter

Hello,
I have another indication, during the boot the bios of the U320 card doesn't indicate the speed and the size of the bus for SDLT drives.
you can see a copy of the screen during the boot.
I don't find any update for the fimware of this card ...

regards
Pascal
