Storage Boards Cleanup
To make it easier to find information about HPE Storage products and solutions, we are doing spring cleaning. This includes consolidation of some older boards, and a simpler structure that more accurately reflects how people use HPE Storage.

Seeing double medium changers and Tape Drives: SAN Backups!

We are performing our backups over the SAN. All other servers are configured identically. One server we deployed however, see double medium and changers and double the Tape Drives.

Setup:

• Two Fabrics A and B.
• Specific Backup Zone on each fabric:
 Backup server.
 MDR
 Hosts
• ELS Library.
• Older MDR.
• Servers have two HBAs: HBA going to Fabric A and HBA going to Fabric B.
• Multi-Pathing software installed on the host.
Backup software: CA Brightstor with SAN option.

Any ideas why only this server would be the only host to see double of each tape device?
I have validated all zones are configured identically. I have a suspecion it is the MDR but then why aren't the other servers having similar issue

Does your MDR has two fibre ports? Are the two ports connected to different fabrics?
If yes to both question you probably need to modify your MDR's configuration.
The MDR's default map(s) present all peripherals to both fibre ports.
I'm afraid MDR doesn't care of Multi pathing software.
You can implement Selective Storage Presentation on your MDR (higly recommended), or simply unplug fibre port number 2

Re: Seeing double medium changers and Tape Drives: SAN Backups!

Hi There,

I indeed agree that SSP must be implemented. I've had nearly the same problem once, and It did not go away before editing the MDR for SSP through the Mapping utility.

And it's pretty certant that Multipath software do not work trough and MDR, caused of reduced SCSI protocol set ...It will never work I tell you ...

There's only the hard way in my opinion.

Gvalor,

I guess that the two SAN switches are interconnected. So that is why you see your library twice.

Adapt your zonings on the switches so the library can be see through only one SAN switch. Redundant paths to a tape library are not yet supported anyway.
