Re: Storagetek T9840 tape drive on HPUX

Hi,
I'll need a little more information.
I presume this drive is not "standalone". What type of robotic-library is it part of ?
The 9840A type is FC-AL (not fabric aware) only, not FC-SW. The 9840B type is FC-SW (fabric aware). What was your intention for connection ? Point-to-Point / SAN / Other ?
What kind of software are you going to use ? Veritas Netbackup (for example) "recognises" and has a toolkit for the 9840B drive.

Hope I'm not boring you with these questions :-)

Regards,
Tom

Re: Storagetek T9840 tape drive on HPUX

Hi
I suppose T9840 is the same as STK9840.

I found this in the OmniBack 4.1 support matrix. STK9840 is supporten for OmniBack with "referenced support". This is explained below:

refers to full Hewlett-Packard support.
refers to ???Referenced Support???.
Referenced Support incorporates full Hewlett-Packard support for Omniback II. However,
for any device related issues, please contact the corresponding product vendor first:
??? Exabyte: 1-800-393-2983 (USA) or 0800-3922-983 (Germany)
??? ATL: 1-949-477-7924 (USA) or 44-1256-818-300 (United Kingdom)
??? StorageTek: 1-800-525-0369 (USA)

Re: Storagetek T9840 tape drive on HPUX

ioscan -funC fc

to check you fc...

You then have to zone you tape on the SAN just as you would a disk.

then:
ioscan
ioscan -funC tape
insf -e

if you are able to see the new tape device then test it with.

fcmsutil /dev/td0 get remote all
fcmsutil /dev/td0 test N_Port_id

Re: Storagetek T9840 tape drive on HPUX

Hi
I don??t think this needs to be a "compatiblity" problem, rather a FC adressing problem. I am not an expert here but I had a similar problem with a FC library. This was by default configured for soft adressing, I had to set the adress hard to get it working. Is there anything about this in tke documentation for the device.

Re: Storagetek T9840 tape drive on HPUX

Hi,
Leif is 100% right. Get those STK guys on site (you cannot set the drive yourself ... or at least you shouldn't ;-) and have them set a hard AL-PA address in the drive. It's one of the options. On the server (have them do this as well ... make sure they send an HP-UX specialist) you'll need the fcmsutil command with the replace_dsk (strange but true) option. Example :
fcmsutil /dev/td2 replace_dsk 0xe2
Where E2 is the AL-PA address that was set in the drive.

Hope this helps,
Tom

Mikula

You may wish to ask Storagetek whether a fibre 9840 can be installed into a 9710 library. You may get a shock!!
