Storageworks 1280 Linux Drivers

Hello All,
We just purchased a Compaq Storageworks 1280 and would like to attach it to our dl380 server. After installing cciss update to Red Hat 8.0 the systems detected the tape during bootup but doesn't seem to load the driver. If I enter the following

mt -f /dev/st0 status

it returns

SCSI 2 Tape drive:
File number =-1, block number=-1, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default). Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (10000): IM_REP_EN

But I can't read a tape or write to a tape. For kicks I isntalled Tapeware which doesn't see the tape drive but won't load because it is unreconised.
