SureStore 80 making loud grunt noise when loading tape and really slow!

Hi all, I have an NT 4 OS with external HP SureStore 80 DLT, and when I place a tape in, the tape drive starts making a loud groan noise. This abnormal, as we've been using this for approx a year w/o same noise. Also, we have cleaned it in resposne, but stil lthe problem noise persists. I wouldn't care so much except when veritas is trying to read our device, it seems to contantly faile, either fail to restore, backup, or even do a simple eject. (I have to power cycle tape drive to get my tape out) Multiple tapes tried, firmware updated, argh, I'm at wits end. Thanks,

We've also notices that when it does backup, its at 40MB per minute. This seems too slow, and was wondering if anyone could provide me an estimate as to if that is normal? Thanks!

Hello,

I think you have some type of drive failure. I would recommend to replace the drive.

DLT8000 can go up to 6Mb/s, which is 360Mb/min. This is the theoretical maximum.
