Tape Drive Remaining Space

Hi
I am using HP-UX 10.20 and I often append data to a single tape drive. How do I determine the remaining free space in the tape drive other than using the time consuming tar -tvf command?

The only tool that can do that is a commercial backup tool like omniback, where it can show a diagram of free space on the media. If your using tar, you can only estimate.

Even if you uses OmniBack or another backup software, tape usage is only reliable if hardware compression is off. Compression ratio is data dependent and with hardware compression on remaining space again is only estimated.
