Tape management?

We have Netbackup server 5.0 installed and Sun Storedge L1000 attached to master.

May some onetell me how the netbackup manage the tape in the tape library. would it delete all the expired backup? or overwrite the tape?

Thanks in advance for any reply.

Re: Tape management?

In our environment with NetBackup DC these are some scenarios observed:
1. Tape Full - Tape is not scratched until all images are expired. Once this occurs, tape is returned to the Scratch pool for future use (overwriting).
2. Tape is not full - Same as above.

Re: Tape management?

To Dave La Mar,

Thanks for your reply.

Do u mean that if I have 5 tape in 1 volume pool, after the first tape is full. it is going to reuse the first tape again after all the backup image on the first tape expired.

Re: Tape management?

Bluebeta,

When all the backup sessions have expired on the first tape in the volume pool, it becomes available again for new backups (starting at the beginning of the tape).

It does not mean that Veritas will select the same tape directly again for new backups. Another (scratch) tape will be selected first, as Veritas will try to get an even usage of all the tapes in the pool.

best regards,
