Ultrium 1-SCSI Compression

I am having a problem getting more than 140gb of data backed up with a SureStore Ultrium 215.

I should be getting 200gb with compression.

I am using Backup Exec v8.6 and have the hardware compression turned on.

What could I be missing?

Dan,

What are you backing up? Binary type files and previously zipped files do not compress well.

Hello,

An Ultrium tape drive can hold 100Gb of data. It assumes a compression ratio of 2:1, hence the 200Gb figure compressed.

If the data is not very compressible, then the tape cannot hold more data than that. If it held less than 100Gb, there is a problem with your tape drive/cartidge. Seeing that you are storing 140Gb, then I think it's the compressibility of your data which is the culprit.

If your system is windows, than you can evaluate the compression ration of your data running any compressor (es:Winzip), the volume of the resulting file vs the original data let you know the compression ratio.
This because the hardware compression in the storages devices work in the same way as software compression.
